If you’re out with a few friends for a couple of drinks, it’s easy to walk into one of the first bars you see…or go back to the same one over and over again. There are loads of great bars in Glasgow that you don’t want to miss out on and we’ve rounded up a few favourites:
The Flying Duck is a basement bar hidden in the heart of Glasgow city centre. The dive bar vibe and the long (and relatively cheap) drinks menu attracts students from across the city – you’re bound to bump into friendly faces here. Open 11am ‘til late every day, the bar regularly hosts a wide range of events including live comedy and music gigs, drag shows, bingo, and quizzes.
The Flying Duck is also pretty well known for its diner-inspired menu – all vegan. And even the most-die hard carnivores love it. Plus, if you show your student ID when you order, you can get 20% knocked off your food bill!
Tingle Shooter Bar describes itself as “the number 1 student bar in the city” – but that’s up to you to decide. The bar is open late every night of the week and has a pretty vast drinks menu – including their famous shooters, mixers, and cocktail fishbowls. If you go with a couple of friends between 4-9pm, spend £5 on drinks and you’ll get a free pizza!
Head to Flat 0/1 and you’ll enter an eclectic mix of house music in a flat stuck in the 70s. It prides itself on being ‘that flat’ – where the music is loud, where the party never stops, and where the drinks cupboard is always full. Flat 0/1 is open until 3am Tuesday-Saturday, and entry is always free. Combine that with their reasonable drinks prices and you’ve got a club night that Glasgow students love.
Bar Soba has three venues across Glasgow – but the Mitchell Lane or Merchant City venues are probably the easiest to get to. Soba wants to give you a night out with a twist. Expect Asian-style street food, classic and original cocktails, as well as local and international DJs playing ‘til midnight every night.
Sound good? Make sure you sign up for their student membership card. It’s free and can get you loads of offers and discounts, including 50% off food, 25% off drinks, and invites to exclusive student events – plus even more.
It may not be your typical student night out, but The Riding Room is definitely worth a visit during your time in Glasgow. A cabaret and cocktail bar with shows and performances throughout the week – the Riding Room offers a fun and unique experience for you and your friends. It’s open ‘til 3am every night, serving a huge range of wines, beers, spirits, and cocktails – with prices starting at just a fiver.
Record Factory is right in the heart of Glasgow’s west end and is a must-visit pit stop on the city’s rock ‘n’ roll scene. There’s live music every weekend – until DJs take over and the club nights start. A huge range of drinks is served, including draught beer and cocktails, as well as all the usuals. The food menu is pretty tempting too – especially with offers available throughout the week. Make the most of the (student exclusive) daily 2-4-1 burger deal, and the £5 lunch. It might be a bit of a walk from your flat, but don’t worry about that – the bar is only two minutes away from the Kelvinhall SPT subway station.
Over in the west end, the Hillhead Bookclub is the place to go for a chilled atmosphere, classic music, and great food and drink. It’s open every day ‘til midnight (ish) and hosts a range of events – from open deck nights to ping pong tournaments. There’s an arcade machine and Super Nintendo set too. Take your student ID along with you and ask about their Library Card. It can open you up to exclusive drinks offers and deals.
It could be worth the walk (if it’s not chucking it down) – but you should probably jump on the subway instead. Hillhead Bookclub is only five minutes away from Hillhead station.
Want something a little different from the standard student night? Head over to Òran Mór in Glasgow’s west end. This traditional church has been transformed into a venue complete with restaurants, bars, and rooms perfect for gigs. It’s here where you’ll find the most ‘Scottish’ experience – so you really can’t miss out while you’re in Glasgow! Jump on the subway and save yourself from the walk – Òran Mór is just a five-minute walk from Hillhead subway station.
